I'm giving it 5 stars but I would rather give it 4.5. It is a wonderful bit of speculative fiction and does a wonderful job of illuminating the hearts, minds, dreams and aspirations of blacks in that period as well as the constant danger regardless of whether you chose to keep your head down and just survive or decided to stand up for your most basic human rights. The lack of a perfect store was because I thought the ending could have been constructed better. Conceptually it works but the execution was not the best. Nevertheless, it was a remarkable read. I will be looking for more works by Sutton Griggs!
