This now canonical work by David Maxwell Walker is a must for any Scots law Undergraduate. While a bit more pricey than Macqueen's introduction to the Scottish system Walker's book acts as a handy reference book for future study with well thought out bibliographies at the end of each chapter as well as a handy index at the back of the book.Of particular interest are the introductory chapters on `legal science' and law's place within the ever-expanding world of positivist academia; indeed this book may be of as much interest to the criminologist or sociologist as it is to the law student. Most recently published in 2001 the book may be a tad outdated in places but on topics like the influence of the `institutional writers' Walker's comment will remain relevant for years to come.As a former classics student I was terrified by law and the sometimes indecipherable jargon that goes with it. After reading Walker's book and taking advantage of the helpful footnotes it's safe to say I am now better served to further my legal studies.
